Species Range

  • Found in the East Solomon Islands, and also in Bougainville Island.

Gender

  • Similar appearance males and females.
  • Red coloring dominates, with an area of black plumage on the head, extending from the forehead, over the crown and the eye ring up to the nape.
  • A yellow band on the upper breast, with black patches on each side of the neck.
  • Green wings, turning into white at the bend, with traces of blue patches.
  • A wide band of red color extends through the primaries, while the underwing feathers are purple-blue, as well as the thighs.
  • Tail feathers are red, with the upper tips green and the lower tips yellow.
  • Orange-red beak, with a darker color on the base above the mandible.
  • Gray feet.
  • Orange-red iris.

Youth

  • They have feathers with little or no yellow on the breast; they lack the black patches on the sides of the neck.
  • The purple coloring in thighs with a green wash.
  • Brown beak.
  • Iris also brown.
