Species Range

  • Lives in South America, extending from eastern Panama in the tip of Central America to the north of Colombia. Toward the west to the Andes, is confined to the areas of southwestern Ecuador. Has also been sighted in the lowlands and other locations in Peru. Also in Amazonia, moving to the north to southern Venezuela, Surinam and the Guyanas. It used to be found in Trinidad Island, but it is probably extinct there. The southern part of its distribution extends to central and northeastern Brazil, and to northern Bolivia. They may be found in Paraguay and possible in northern Argentina as well, but there is not certainty of this fact. aunque esto no se sabe con certeza.

Gender

  • Similar in the coloring of their plumage.
  • White predominates on males with a pink-salmon wash toward the eye-ring and obvious on the base of the neck plumage, as well as on the cheeks.
  • The crest is short and white, with the exception of the pink wash evident on the base of the plumage of the crown.
  • There is a very evident yellow wash on the lower parts of the flight and tail wings.
  • The bare skin of the eye ring is a grayish blue, turning more prominent under the lower eyelid.
  • White beak
  • Gray feet.
  • Dark brown iris.
  • Females are usually recognized by their smaller size, even though there is no marked different in the color of the iris of both genders.

youth

  • The skin of the eye ring is less prominent, without the evident widening below the lower eyelids.
  • At this stage they tend to have a more circular shape.
