• Found in northeastern Mexico, in the vicinity of Sierra Madre Occidental, with a second, more regionalized population more to the east. It used to be found in southern Arizona and southeastern New Mexico, in the US. It has been recently re-introduced to Arizona.

• Similar appearance in both sexes.
• A bright green predominates, with a slightly more yellow shade on the cheeks and auricular coverts.
• Forehead and frontal part of the crown are carmine red, with wide stripes of a similar color extending to the back above the eyes.
• The plumage area directly in front of the eyes is a deeper shade of red.
• The bend of wing, carpal area and thighs are also red.
• Coverts of the lower wings are yellow, while the smaller tail and flight feathers are gray.
• The skin of the eye ring is a light yellow shade.
• Black beak.
• Black-gray feet.
• Orange iris.

• A duller color in their general appearance.
• The red plumage of the head does not extend above the eyes, and there are no red markings on the wings.
• The red area of the thighs is more reduced.
• Lighter beak with a dark gray area at the base of the upper beak.

R. p. pachyrhyncha

• Se encuentra en el área montañosa conocida como la Sierra Madre Occidental, al noroeste de México, extendiéndose desde el este de Sonora y Chihuahua hacia el sur a Michoacán.
• Aves de esta raza también han sido reintroducidas a Arizona.

R. p. terrisi:

• Ocurre en el noreste de México, en la vecindad de la Sierra Madre Oriental.
• Se extiende hacia el norte desde Las Joyas de la Sala, en el suroeste de Tamaulipas hacia la parte oeste de Nuevo Laredo, el cual parece ser el centro de su distribución, y al oeste hasta la Sierra Guadalupe, al suroeste de Saltillo en Coahuila.
• También se piensa que ha ocurrido en Veracruz, de acuerdo con un reporte que se hizo en 1941. Considerablemente más oscuro en la coloración en general comparado con la raza designada. El plumaje rojo de la cabeza en este caso es marrón.
• De igual manera, el doblez de las alas, la orilla del carpiano y los muslos, son un tono más oscuro de rojo, acercándose más al café. Las cubiertas grises de las alas menores tienen una ligera difusión de color olivo. 
• Esta raza, a veces conocida como Maroon-fronted Parrot (Perico Pico Duro Terrisi), también es significativamente más grande que la especie designada.
