Size:
26 cm (10 in).
Species Range
- Found in Central America, extending from the south of Sonora in northwestern Mexico, to the south mainly on the Pacific coast, as far as Guanacaste in northwestern Costa Rica.
Gender
- Green predominates on males, with black edges on the green feathering of the head and neck, extending to the upper parts and breast.
- Forehead and frontal part of the crown are white, ocassionally tinted with yellow.
- The feather area surrounding the eyes is red. Both crown and occiput are a dull blue, also with black edges.
- Primaries' coverts as well as the shoulder area are bright red; the primaries themselves are green on the edges close to the base of the feathers, and blue tipped.
- The outer edges of the secondaries are thoroughly blue, while the lower surface of the flight feathers is green-blue.
- The minor wing coverts are green.
- The coverts of the minor and major tail are yellow-green, with tail feathers being green, with similar color tips.
- There area visible red markings at the base of the lateral tail feathers.
- Light yellow beak.
- Gray-pink feet.
- Yellow iris.
- Females are generally smaller in size and also have the primaries' coverts and the shoulder area green, instead of red.
Youth
- Distinguishable by their red face feathering, restricted solely to the area around the eyes and not extending over the eyes.
- Also, the area of white plumage is smaller, with a more visible yellow shade.
- The shoulder area is green in both sexes at this height.
